I previously had a DROBO S 5, but was needing something always online. I loved the speed of the Drobo, but having to leave a computer plugged into it for sharing wasn't working for me. I wanted to get another Drobo, but it was early in the COVID days, and they were just out of stock everywhere. So I turned to Synology, and I haven't looked back. I've loved the features as a NAS (Network Attached Storage) but with the integrated OS I'm able to run some desk dockers and VM (virtual machines), plus capturing several IP cameras has been amazing.

I had some early on frustrations. I was coming from a Drobo world where HDD didn't matter that much and mix and match was ok. Sybnology has a list of comparable drives and cameras ( https://www.synology.com/en-global/compatibility ) So I initially just got whatever drives. I received s warning at initial setup that they were not on the recommendation list, but proceed anyway with my four initial drives. They failed within a month. Luky it only was four drives in an eight bay enclosure. I was able to put in four supported drives and easily (but time consuming) migrate to them.

Support has been amazing, at one point I had bought a cameras on their supported list that said two way audio worked. Once I had the camera and was getting to success, they were quick to reply and I could tell they weren't just stepping to prompt after prompt to solve the issue. Sure initially, but once we were both aware each other knew what they were talking about, we progressed just fine. To the point where I created a filewall rule and a user they could use to connect directly to the Synology and fix the issue with a developer.

I've recommended Synolgy drives to any one asking me about backup solutions.
